New research reveals that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these drugs should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
