Defense Department Investigation Concludes Defense Secretary Placed Troops in Danger with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing classified intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in question contained details about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not approved for transmitting classified information.

Potential Risk to Troops

The internal investigation found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he shared, though it was not specified whether he formally exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed details that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he had the right to downgrade information and considered the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be made public in the coming days.
